There are only two real ways to get out of a car lease. These, at least, are the easiest ways, and they each have their own requirements.

The first and easiest way to get out of a car lease is if you pay the remaining balance that you owe the dealership. This may be easy, but it’s a tough decision to make especially if you need a great deal of money to pay off the rest of the lease agreement.

The other way is to transfer your lease to someone else. Now, there are many car lease transfer services that can help you achieve this, but there is one problem to tackle: the car dealership that you leased your car from has to honor the possibility of a lease transfer. Basically, what you are doing is selling your car to someone else by charging that person whatever you paid for already and then have him continue the lease that you applied for. This takes a lot of paperwork, and it will involve you trying to find someone interested enough to take over your lease.

Whatever way you end up with, there are difficulties. The question you have to ask yourself is, Will it be worth all that trouble just to get out of a car lease?

As thousands of auto dealership across the country close, thousands of consumers are ending up on the hook for used car loans that the dealers were supposed to have taken care of.

When a car buyer owes money on a used car that they are trading in, the dealer agrees to pay off the outstanding loan. But as dealerships go out of business, some are leaving consumers with the bill. The lender will then go after the previous owner who thought the debt was already paid. They can also repossess the car from the new owner who assumed it came with a clear title. The consumer can end up with two car payments and a damaged credit rating.

The problem may only get worse as the recession continued. In some states, dealers are required to prove they are paying off a vehicle’s lien before transferring the title. There are also a few states that have programs that require dealers to post insurance bonds to repay victimized car buyers. Consumers in states that don’t have these programs have little recourse. Consumers can try to sue the dealership, but if they have declared bankruptcy, there may be no money to reclaim.

To avoid these problems, new car buyers with trade-ins should first pay off the loan themselves, or deal with high volume dealership that is part of a larger auto group and therefore less likely to fold. Used car buyers should insist on seeing a vehicle’s title to make sure that it has no liens.

There are lots of reasons why you may end driving with your canine friend in the car. A trip to the vet, a day at the park or even a family road trip. Here are some tips on how to keep your dog and yourself safe:

It may be tempting to just let your dog jump in the car and sit wherever it wants, but it’s not the safest thing for you or your pet. It’s much safer to properly secure your dog using a crate, a harness or a nylon mesh pet barrier between the rear cargo compartment and the rear seat.

Don’t allow your dog to stick its head out the window, especially on the highway, it could suffer eye damage from flying road debris and insects.

If you are planning to take your dog on a long road trip for the first time, desensitize it by taking it on some short trips first. Make the trips fun and reward good car behavior.

Make sure to always bring along everything that you may need, even on a short trip. This includes a bowl, food and water, a blanket, toys, treats, and a leash. Giving your dog a chew toy for the ride will help to keep it busy and relaxed.

Be aware of the temperature where your dog is positioned. If necessary, open a window or adjust the air conditioning or heating to prevent overheating or a chill.

If you’re going on a road trip, put a piece of tape on the dog’s tags with a local phone number or cell number in case the dog gets loose. Your home number won’t be of much help to someone who finds the dog while you’re traveling.

Auto dealers are urging frantically to leak from the jurisdiction of the new consumer finance protection agency in the financial reform legislation. Dealers argue they already are regulated by state agencies and that the new regulation would stiffen credit for shoppers. The entire debate made the guys at MoneyWatch rise a question: Are they trying to sneak something out of the regulators?

If you are thinking to buy or lease a new car, it is a question you should ask and be ready for. “Car dealers buy and sell money for profit,” says Linda Goldberg, owner of auto brokerage firm CarQ.

One of the most alarming scams this broker has run across is the so-called “yo-yo finance deal.” In this situation, the consumer gets financing over the dealer and thinks he has engaged a deal for payments of, say, $500 monthly. You take the car home. A week later, you get a call from the dealership that says in order to get financing approved; the payment must be $650 a month. Pay up or the car will be repossessed. To protect yourself from the yo-yo scam, don’t get into any contracts that take account of language like “subject to loan approval.” Also, every genuine loan or lease agreement has an endorsement number. Ask the dealership for that number.

Other tactics that you should take into practice are:

Get financing approved in advance. Have your Credit Score on Hand. In another dealer scam, you’re told your credit score does not qualify you for the car company’s low-rate financing when you really could qualify. If your FICO score is 700 or above, you should be qualified for nearly any special promotional financing.

Keep things separated. Dealerships love “payment buyers” who focus only on the monthly payment. That lets the seller wrap all together the trade-in, if any, the price of the new car and financing which makes you unable to see if you’re overpaying. Instead, negotiate based on the new car price after comparing 3 or 4 price quotes from a web site. Then make sure the dealer and finance specialist translate the trade-in allowance, the new-car loan’s interest rate and its term.

Don’t buy any add-ons. Many auto brands now habitually include warranties on the expensive parts such as the engine, transmission and axles-lasting five years or more. That’s generally enough warranty.

To do this they will be keeping most of their plants within the U.S. open through its traditional summer closure period.

GM said nine of its 11 U.S. plants will not close for the usual two-week summer shutdowns and remain to operate over the June 28 to July 9 period to aid meet robust demand for vehicles like the Buick LaCrosse or Chevrolet Traverse. Most of GM’s U.S. stamping and powertrain plants will also work to support assembly operations.
“Our manufacturing teams are taking creative approaches to increase production and reduce the wait times for our dealers and customers,” said Mark Reuss, head in chief of GM North America, in a public declaration.

GM’s U.S. sales increased 15% in the first five months of 2010 from the same period 2009, to some extent disappointing the 17% increase in U.S. industry sales.

Not including four brands GM sold or shut down, U.S. sales for its remaining Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac brands were up more than 30 percent this year through May.

Automakers have conventionally used summer shutdowns to help complete the yearly model exchange and support upkeep operations.

Take a look at these models compiled by Jerry Edgerton for MoneyWatch.com.

Volvo C70: Edmund’s reviewers seem to like the retractable hardtop on this model; which also gives an advantage compared to other convertibles when winter comes. Like all Volvos, the C70 is well equipped when it comes to security.

Ford Mustang: Although the new 2011 Mustang will be shortly on sale; but if you don’t want to wait the 2010 model could be perfect for you. You could go for style over speed with the V6 model; rated 18 mpg in city and 26 on highway. There are a lot of rebates and incentives going on so go ahead and ask for different deals.

Mini-Cooper: There are little cars as cute as a Mini convertible; BMW has made a great job here achieving a very hard to get combination of speed and fuel efficiency. There’s a 5% discount from the original tag available as well as regional incentives.

Jeep Wrangler: This is an unbeatable off roader with a solid quality background. It might not be the right one if you plan to use it on the city but there are little cars in this price range that will match a Wrangler off the road. Rebates and 0% financing could be available in your area.

You are ready to buy your new car and you know what you want, now you need to find the best possible quote. It’s best to get several quotes from different sources. Where should you get your quotes from? There are many sources for new car quotes, websites, magazines, newspapers and of course, the dealerships. Where should you start?

Online: The most convenient way to get a new car price quote is online. Online price quote services are free and no obligation. Many will also give you a lot of other useful information about the vehicle including the invoice price, MSRP, MPG, pictures, reviews, etc. Getting the quote from home, without having to drive around to dealerships, saves a lot of time and hassle.

By Phone: If you prefer talking on the phone with a live person, look in the Yellow Pages for some local dealers and call them for some comparative car quotes. One possible downside with calling is that they may be reluctant to commit to a new car quote over the phone and may try to pressure you to go to the dealership in person.

Dealership: Going to the dealerships in person allows you to negotiate a quote face to face, but it is also the most time consuming and opens you up to getting haggled by sales tactics. It’s best to save the in person visit for your last and final quote, with your online and phone quotes in hand.

When purchasing a new car, it’s important to know the current new car invoice price and MSRP for that vehicle, to help you negotiate. The invoice price of a new car is supposed to be the price that the manufacturer charged the dealer for that vehicle. However, some dealerships advertise that they sell their cars at or below invoice prices. So, how do they do this and still make a profit? The secret is that the new car invoice prices that they show you at the dealership aren’t necessarily what they are actually paying for those vehicles. Sometimes they are getting the car well below the invoice price themselves. This is because manufacturers offer incentives to the dealer to encourage them to sell more vehicles and to sell them faster. You can use this knowledge as a bargaining tool.

Here are some of the most common incentives used:
• Dealer holdback: Some manufacturers offer the dealers holdbacks. A holdback is a financing plan that allows the dealer to save money on the cost of the vehicle if the vehicle is sold within 90 days. The amount that the dealer gets back is usually a percentage of the original invoice price.
• Manufacturer to dealer incentives: Manufacturers sometime offer the dealer incentives for specific models, usually this is applied to slower selling models. When the dealer sells one of those vehicles, they get money back. For some models that can be thousands of dollars.
• Volume incentive: This incentive is based on the number of vehicles the dealer sells. Basically the dealer gets a reward for selling a certain number of cars. This creates a greater urgency for the dealer to sell more vehicles in order to get that cash reward.

To calculate a true wholesale car price dealer invoice is what the dealership paid the manufacturer minus marketing considerations, such as holdback and incentives.

In many cases, you can negotiate a price below car invoice, if you are less particular about the options you want on the car and you leverage competing dealers against each other.

But, it’s important to keep in mind that the validity of this method for calculating wholesale car prices can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Typically, foreign car brands incur greater costs, in the form of tariffs, taxes and import costs, which makes it unrealistic make the actual dealer invoice, a starting point for price negotiation.

The best car buying tip we can give you is to shop around and get dealers to compete with one another. As the dealers fall over themselves competing for your business, it will become abundantly clear to you what is fair new car price. If you’re flexible on color and options, you are on your way to getting a fantastic deal.
